Step-by-Step Guide In Making A Workbench
Posted by siteauthor on May 27, 2010 in Remodeling
A workspace simply isn’t complete without a workbench. Have you been fixing your dyson upright vacuum cleaner on the dining table or repairing your kid’s broken bike on the porch? If you do, then it’s time to have for yourself a workbench. Luckily, the handyman in you shouldn’t find it difficult to come up with one.
Buying a prefabricated one is easy. All it takes is a trip to the nearest hardware store. However, it’s a bit difficult to find a readymade one that’ll fit exactly into the space allotted for it in the workspace. But if you build your own from scratch, you’re in total control of how it should end up. You can customize everything from the length, height, width, shelves, color, and the like.
First thing you need to do is come up with a plan. If you doubt you can draw your own, then simply get an existing one. It’s easy to obtain one at hardware stores, or even on the internet. But it doesn’t mean you will go closely with what’s on the plan. Since you’re aiming for a customized one, you can make it simpler or even complex as you want.
From the plan, you can come up with your own dimensions, structuring, etc. The next step is to gather the materials you’ll need. Usually, everything is also listed on the plan. Other than the materials, you will also need the right tools for the job. Chances are, you already got them; hence, the need for a workbench. Otherwise, consider buying them as a good investment. Besides, you’ll be in the mood to use them all the time once the project is done.
Power tools sure will make your task easier and faster. However, they are not at all that necessary. But if you don’t want for your workbench to take weeks to finish, then using power tools is the way to go. Using the right ones for the task at hand is key. For instance, cutting the lumber to the right specifications need to be done with a circular saw, and not by an echo chainsaw. Other things that you’ll need include a drill, hammer, screwdriver, measuring tape, clamps, etc.
After every part is ready, it’s time for assembling your workbench. For this, you will need materials such as bolts, nuts, wood glue, nails and others. After assembling them together, it’s time to sand it. You can use a belt sander, or do it by hand by using a sand paper. You can choose to paint or stain the finished product, according to your preference.
After the workbench is fully done, it’s time to put it in place in your workspace. From thereon it becomes the place where your woodworking and repairing needs are done. Celebrate a job well done. Take out your roasting pan, create a scrumptious dish, and share it with your family and best buds.
